A faucet that leaks can waste a surprising amount of water, stain a fixture, damage the cabinet below, and signal that a small internal part is wearing out. Find the Leak Before You Buy Parts
Start with a dry faucet and a paper towel. Turn on the water, then turn it off and watch closely. A drip from the spout after the faucet is fully off usually means a worn internal seal, cartridge, or valve component. Water collecting around the base of the handle points more often to an O-ring, packing nut, or cartridge seal.
If water appears under the sink, do not assume the faucet is the problem. Dry the supply valves, flexible supply lines, drain connections, and the bottom of the faucet. Then run both hot and cold water while checking with the paper towel. A towel will reveal a small leak faster than your eyes will.

Plug the drain, place a towel in the sink, and remove the faucet handle. Decorative caps often hide the handle screw. Depending on the model, the screw may be Phillips-head, flathead, or an Allen screw located on the side or back of the handle.

Once the handle is off, use a wrench to remove the packing nut and lift out the valve stem. At the bottom of the stem is usually a rubber washer held by a small screw. Do not scrape ceramic disks with metal tools. If a disk is chipped or the faucet still leaks after seal replacement, replace the disk cartridge.
Reassemble Slowly and Test for More Than a Drip
Reassemble the faucet in reverse order. Tighten nuts until snug, not excessively tight. Over-tightening can deform seals, crack plastic components, and make the next repair harder.
Remove the aerator from the end of the spout before turning the water back on. This lets any debris loosened during the repair flush out instead of clogging the screen. Open the shutoff valves slowly, then run both hot and cold water for a minute. Check around the handle, the base of the faucet, the supply connections, and beneath the sink.
Finally, reinstall the aerator and test the faucet several times. A repaired faucet should shut off cleanly without a delayed drip. One or two drops immediately after use can be water left in the spout. Continued dripping after a few minutes means the sealing surfaces are still not closing correctly.

The most common mistake is replacing a part without confirming the faucet type or model. A cartridge that is close but not exact may fit into the body while failing to seal. Another frequent problem is using too much force on old hardware. If a nut, valve, or shutoff is corroded, forcing it can create a leak where there was not one before.
Also pay attention to water pressure. Excessively high pressure can shorten the life of faucet cartridges, supply lines, toilet fill valves, and appliance hoses. If faucets throughout the property leak or wear out unusually fast, the issue may be bigger than one fixture.
For rental properties and small commercial spaces, document the repair with photos and keep the part number. That small record saves time when the same faucet needs service again.
